چکیده

Both referees have requested further details regarding our sedimentation scheme, and we have changed the text to make our description clearer. Our modelling framework is that of a single Lagrangian air parcel. Using a single box undoubtedly makes the realistic incorporation of sedimentation difficult, because of the issues identified by the referees. Other studies have used 1-D (height vs time) formulations in order to incorporate sedimentation. However, using such a 1-dimensional ‘curtain’ is also unrealistic, because of wind shear. If the modelling is to be carried out along trajectories, the choice,

Diagnosis of processes controlling water vapour in the tropical tropopause layer by a Lagrangian cirrus model

We have developed a Lagrangian air-parcel cirrus model (LACM), to diagnose the processes controlling water in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL). LACM applies parameterised microphysics to air parcel trajectories. The parameterisation includes the homogeneous freezing of aerosol droplets, the growth/sublimation of ice particles, and sedimentation of ice particles, so capturing the main dehydra...

Interactive comment on “Aircraft measurements of microphysical properties of subvisible cirrus in the tropical tropopause layer” by R. P. Lawson

This paper describes observations of subvisible cirrus (SVC) clouds with the NASA WB-57F aircraft during the Costa Rica Aura Validation Experiment (CR-AVE) in 2006. SVC clouds were encountered and characterised with state-of-the-art optical array imageing probes in extended areas of the tropical tropopause layer with temperatures as low as −90◦C. Nearly spherical crystal shapes were measured fo...

Interactive comment on “Evaluation of balloon and satellite water vapour measurements in theSouthern tropical UTLS during the HIBISCUS

The authors combine balloon-borne in situ measurements of water vapour in the tropical tropopause region during the HIBISCUS campaign with observational data of several satellite instruments. Although the performed measurements are of large scientific value, they are not presented well in the paper. The approach of evaluating different types of water vapour measurements is diluted by the way th...

1) How are SVC defined in these measurements? As stated in the manuscript, the presence of SVC was “detected” using the CPI, which defined the physical boundaries of SVC encountered by the C-130. Because the CPI was operational on every SVC flight, this optimized the definition of physical boundaries of SVC encountered by the WB-57F. Also, as explained in the manuscript, quantitative 2D-S measu...

Satellite observations of cirrus clouds in the Northern Hemisphere lowermost stratosphere

Here we present observations of the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere (CRISTA) of cirrus cloud and water vapour in August 1997 in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS). The observations indicate a considerable flux of moisture from the upper tropical troposphere into the extratropical lowermost stratosphere (LMS), resulting in the occurrence of hig...
